Withdraw from Summer Session Quarter

Next steps to withdraw from Summer Session quarter

You are unable to drop your final course because you are receiving financial aid. If your intent is to drop all your summer courses, the withdrawal process must be completed and received by the Summer Session Office by the drop deadline.

If you are considering withdrawing due to financial reasons, we strongly suggest that you consult with an adviser in the Financial Aid Office prior to making a decision to withdraw. They may be able to help.

Consequences of dropping to 0 credits

  • As long as you submit the Summer Withdrawal Form prior to the session drop deadline, your tuition and campus fee will be reversed
  • You will no longer be eligible for summer financial aid (see adjustment to aid details below)
  • You will be billed for any aid that has paid to your account (see reduction details below)

If you understand the consequences listed above and would like to withdraw from all credits in the summer term, follow the process below:

Once we receive the form, Summer Session Office staff will manually drop you from your class within 3 business days. This change will be reflected in your portal.

Note: As long as you submit the Summer Withdrawal Form before the session drop deadline, your tuition and campus fee will be reversed (even if the manual drop happens after the deadline). It will take 24 hours for your accounts to reflect this change.

If you are not a current UC Santa Cruz student and cannot drop all your Summer Session classes, please contact summer@ucsc.edu for support.

If you would like to maintain financial aid and continue taking classes to satisfy your program requirements this summer, we recommend that:

Withdrawal process

Notify the Summer Session Office of your intention to withdraw

The withdrawal process begins when you notify the Summer Session Office of your intent to withdraw. This date will be used to prorate your federal, state, and campus financial aid award. Students who never attend a class during the withdrawal quarter will have all of their financial aid canceled for that term.

Per federal regulations, all withdrawal petitions are processed within thirty days (30) from the date of withdrawal. An email will be sent to you when your aid has been adjusted as a result of your withdrawal. You will be referred to my.ucsc.edu to view your revised awards for the term.

Adjustments to aid

The date of your withdrawal will determine what percentage of aid you will be billed. This can range from 0-100%. Your aid may be prorated as follows:

Federal aid

Federal financial aid includes Pell Grant, Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Student Loan, Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS), and Grad PLUS. Financial aid is prorated based on the number of days you were enrolled. If you did not receive all of the loan funds you were offered, you may be eligible to receive the additional funds. If you are eligible for additional loan funds, you will be notified and will have the opportunity to decide if you would like to receive them.

State aid

Cal Grant A or the fee portion of the Cal Grant B is adjusted according to the actual tuition and student services fees assessed to your billing account. If you attended classes and the Summer Session Office lowers your fees due to your withdrawal and the resulting fees are less than the Cal Grant award, the Cal Grant will be reduced to equal the revised fee amount. The exception is if you notify a campus official that you never attended classes. In this case, your Cal Grant will be canceled. The Cal Grant B Access Award is prorated based on the percentage of time you were enrolled.

UC Santa Cruz aid

UC Santa Cruz Grants are revised based on the number of sessions you complete. For example, if you are offered UC Santa Cruz Grant based on enrolling in classes for both Session 1 and Session 2, but only complete Session 1, then your Session 2 grant would be canceled. Students can keep disbursed University Loan, Dream Loan, and other UCSC Scholarships.

Private aid

For guidance on how to handle past or future disbursements of your private aid funds, including loans and scholarships, the Financial Aid Office will require you to contact the private agencies (if necessary) when you withdraw.

Financial aid reductions

If you received more aid than you earned, you must repay the excess funds. Aid reductions will appear as charges on your UC Santa Cruz Statement of Account. These are also viewable in the Finances section of the Student Center in my.ucsc.edu.

W grades

If you request and receive a W grade for all courses in any given quarter, you will be considered (by the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office) as withdrawn for that quarter using the date of the last grade W petition as the date of withdrawal.

Tuition and housing refunds (CREDITS)

Fee/Tuition refunds/credits and/or on-campus housing refunds/credits that result from your withdrawal will be applied to any financial aid charges that result from the reduction of your aid. Any funds remaining will be disbursed to you. The Fee Refund Credit Policy is available at, https://summer.ucsc.edu/tuition-aid/payment-refund

Withdrawing prior to the start of the term

If you withdraw before the first day of instruction, all of your financial aid awards will be canceled for the quarter(s) from which you are withdrawing.
