FAQs
Edge Frequently Asked Questions
These FAQs are specifically designed for newly admitted students taking their first UC Santa Cruz courses through Summer Edge the summer before their first fall quarter.
Registration
Do I have to register for Summer Edge if I want to take classes this summer?
If you want to take classes at UCSC this summer, other than your mandatory 1-credit Slug Orientation Course that all new admits are enrolled into automatically, you have to register for Summer Edge before June 15th.
Does registering commit me to taking summer classes?
No! Registration is just the process to set up your accounts to be able to enroll in summer classes. If you register but decide not to enroll, you can cancel your registration penalty free.
Is registration the same as summer enrollment?
No – registration is the process that gets your accounts set up for an early start in summer. You must be registered to be able to enroll in summer classes (other than your 1-credit mandatory Slug Orientation Course that all new admits must complete before fall).
Does registration cost anything?
Nope! Register for free for the option of taking classes this summer. For details about summer tuition costs, see our costs and financial aid section.
Course enrollment
How do I choose my classes?
Check out our choosing classes page to find course selection guides or email summeredge@ucsc.edu with questions or to book an individual meeting with summer staff.
How many credits should I enroll in over the summer?
You must enroll in a minimum of 7 credits for Summer Edge. All new admits will be enrolled in the mandatory 1-credit Slug Orientation Course regardless of participation in Summer Edge. For questions related to your Slug Orientation Course, contact the Orientation Department.
Most classes are 5 credits, so you can take a 5-credit class and a lower workload 2-credit class, or two 5-credit classes. Remember that you can take your credits in any session or over multiple sessions.
Can I take classes in any session?
Yes! There are flexible options so that you can take classes in any session.
You can take a 5-credit class in Session 1 and a 2-credit class in Session 2 (or vice versa), or take two 5-credit classes. Remember that classes offered in Session 1 and Session 2 are taught at an accelerated pace (a 10-week class in just 5 weeks!), so consider this when you are planning.
Can you recommend a 2-credit course?
Yes!
For First Year Students: we recommend STEV 26: Stevenson 26 – Navigating the Research University This is a 2-credit academic success course designed for newly admitted First Year students!
For Transfer students we recommend KRSG 25: Kresge 25: Transfer Excellence at the Research University This 2-credit course is just for Transfers and is very popular.
Can I take a Session 1 class and still join the Edge Residential Experience?
As long as you enroll in at least one class in Session 2, you are eligible to join the Edge Residential Experience and live on campus during that Session.
Can I just take online classes?
Sure! You can choose to only enroll in Synchronous or Asynchronous online classes.
Synchronous online classes have set meeting days/times online while in Asynchronous online classes students often complete the online course assignments at any time.
Regardless of the type of class (synchronous online or asynchronous online), most classes have weekly deadlines for assignments. Occasionally, exams are scheduled when students have more flexibility (e.g., early in the morning, late at night, etc., or on weekends).
Make sure to check your syllabus so you know what to expect!
Costs, Financial Aid & How to Pay
How much does Summer Edge cost?
Summer tuition is charged per-credit, so costs will change depending on how many credits you take. All students who take classes at UCSC (online or in person) also pay a one-time-per-quarter Campus Fee.
If you want to live on campus while you are in classes over summer you will also pay for housing and dining – the costs for that depends on the number of weeks you live on campus and your room type.
All students who enroll in summer classes in addition to their 1-credit Slug Orientation Course are also automatically enrolled in UC’s health insurance – UC SHIP. Students with eligible coverage already can waive this cost by submitting the UC SHIP waiver.
Additional costs might include textbooks or course materials – check with your instructor to determine this for your classes.
Is financial aid available in summer?
Yes! Summer Edge is a special program so aid eligible students must take a minimum of 7 credits over the summer quarter to be eligible for full funding (instead of the 12 credits continuing students have to take). This makes Edge a great opportunity to maximize your summer aid while focusing on fewer classes.
Because summer is the 4th quarter of the previous academic year, students applying for aid must submit a 2025-2026 FAFSA or Dream Application in addition to the 2026-2027 application submitted for financial aid starting in fall. Transfer students and students who already have the previous year’s application on file should make an update to add the UCSC school Code 001321. Find out more about eligibility requirements for Summer Edge students by visiting the Financial Aid website.
How do I see my aid offer for summer?
In order to receive an aid offer you must:
Submit your 2025-2025 FAFSA or Dream Act Application
AND
Enroll in at least 7 credits
Financial Aid will review your application once these two criteria are met. If your offer is not what you expected, or you decide to cancel Summer Edge, you have until the drop deadline for the session you are enrolled in to drop with a full tuition refund.
For information on how to view and accept your aid, see the Financial Aid website.
I’ve enrolled in summer classes. When do I have to pay my tuition?
If a charge says ‘future’, it was posted after our most recent billing cycle and has not yet been billed and is not due yet. Any charge on your account can be paid (due or future) once it has been posted to your account. There are no Student Business Services payment plans available over the summer. You can pay at your own pace, but summer tuition and the Campus Fee are due by August 10. Visit the Payments and Refunds page on our website to learn more.
How do I pay?
Payments can be made by students at: My UCSC> My Account $ > UCSC eBill/ePay

Housing
I want to live on campus this summer. How do I do that?
You must submit a housing application for summer (this is in addition to any application you may have submitted for fall). You can live on campus as long as you are enrolled in classes through Summer Edge. Your housing contract must match your Session length. To get all of the benefits from the Edge Residential Experience, enroll in at least one class in Session 2 or the 10-Week Session.
Which housing application do I use?
I am enrolled in:
- Session 1 only – Session 1 Application
- Session 2 – Summer Edge Application (Edge Residential Experience)
- Session 1 and Session 2 – 10 Week Application
- 10-Week Classes – 10 Week Application
- 8-Week classes or Session 1 and 8-Week classes- 8 Week Application
How much does it cost to live on campus?
You can see the costs for housing and dining based on the length of your housing contract by visiting the Housing website.
Should I be worried about getting an assignment for Summer Edge?
There is plenty of housing for registered Summer Edge students. Keep in mind, however, that you are not guaranteed your first choice preference as there are limited rooms available for each room-type. The most common configuration is a triple, so selecting this option may get you an assignment more quickly.
I applied for Family Student Housing for fall – will I get space for my family in Summer Edge Housing?
No. Family Student Housing is a separate on-campus community with apartments appropriate for families. Summer Edge Housing is assigned by bed space and is only for students currently enrolled in summer classes. If you are waiting for Family Student Housing, please visit their website or contact them directly with any questions.
I would like to join the Edge Residential Experience in Session 2, but I have classes in Session 1 and would also like to live on campus during that time. Can I do that?
There are options for students who would like to live on campus with Summer Session before the Edge Residential Experience begins but it is important to understand the implications of moving in before the Edge move-in date. Peer Mentor on-campus support and programming take place in Session 2. Please contact summeredge@ucsc.edu to find out more.
Can I still live on campus if I decide not to take summer classes?
No. You must be enrolled in more than the 1-credit Slug Orientation Course through Summer Edge in order to be eligible to live on campus.
I would like to live on campus for the Edge Residential Experience, but my Session 2 classes are online. What do I do?
No problem! As long as you are enrolled in at least one class (other than your Slug Orientation Course) in Session 2 – online or in person – you are eligible to live on campus.
I am planning to move to campus for the Edge Residential Experience in Session 2. Do I have to move out when the program ends or can I stay until fall?
If you have a housing assignment in Session 2 AND a housing assignment for fall, you can apply for summer-fall transitional housing through your student housing portal. With transitional housing, you can remain on campus and then move into your fall assignment through the early arrivals program instead of moving off of campus and returning. Visit the housing website for costs and additional details about transitional housing and early move in for fall.
Can I store my belongings on campus after move out?
There is no storage on campus for student belongings during the break between the end of summer and start of fall, however, you can apply for Summer-Fall Transitional Housing in your student housing portal.
With transitional housing, you will have a room assignment and can come and go as you please. Visit the summer housing website for costs and additional details about transitional housing. You can also explore local storage options in Santa Cruz.
Can I have a car on campus this summer?
Yes, over the Summer Session students are eligible for “R” Remote Permits. Visit the Transportation and Parking Services website for rates and applications.
Dining
Where can I use my Slug Points?
Check out Dining Locations and Hours for Summer!
I have Slug Points left and classes are going to end soon. Can I get a refund?
No, unused Slug Points will expire on the last day of the contract period. Slug Points are non-transferable, non-refundable, and do not carry over to the academic year. There may be opportunities to use remaining Slug Points to purchase items in bulk from select on-campus locations. Check with your RA or Peer Mentors for more information.

I enrolled for summer, but I withdrew my Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) or was cancelled by admissions. What happens now?
