Summer Canvas

Canvas Course Shells 

Availability: Annually on April 1 

Summer term course shells are available in your Canvas dashboard as unpublished. If you have a previous course you want to copy, here’s a video about importing or the text guide from Canvas. Here are the directions for importing the Summer Introduction Module into your Canvas course. You can also request that it be added or ask for any other support with an email to tlc@ucsc.edu or a post on the Slack workspace.

If you are not seeing your course, the issue is probably that you have not yet been added to the class as the instructor because:

1. Your appointment letter is still in progress
2. You need to accept your appointment, or 
3. You are a new hire who has not yet received their appointment letter, or your UCSC credentials have not been created yet

Resources are available. 

• If you are new to teaching during summer, or would like a refresher, you can reference the one-page “What’s Different in Summer” guide.
• The Teaching and Learning Center website contains our best teaching resources, including the learner-center syllabus template. 
• New to using Canvas? If so, take a look at these resources covering common topics, and this self-paced tutorial called “Let’s Get This Canvas Started”. There’s also a number of resources in the Help button on the left side menu in Canvas, including 24/7 Canvas Support via phone or chat.
• There is now a link in Canvas to the online bookstore in the left side navigation menu. You can use the link to identify the materials that are needed in your course, and your students will use the link to purchase their course materials.
• Course shells now include a Syllabus Acknowledgement assignment in the Course Introduction module. This assignment is provided as a convenience to support the campus need for reporting students who begin instructional activity. More details are available on the Office of the Registrar’s website.
• Lecture Capture is available for in-room recording of lectures. Visit its.ucsc.edu/lecture-capture to learn more and schedule recordings.
