First Year Edge (formerly known as Summer Academy) is an exciting opportunity for all new slugs to transition into a world-class research institution. You’ll get a head start on degree requirements while experiencing a rigorous academic environment with dedicated faculty in small classes that support your success.

Living in the residence halls with Peer Mentors and Resident Assistants, you will not only make great connections with peer mentors, classmates, and roommates but also learn how to navigate campus life. First Year Edge also includes a ton of fun, including Bay Area road trips and exploration of the University’s unique location, culture, community, and identity. 


After accepting your admission to UCSC for fall. Follow these steps:

  1. Register for First Year Edge before the June 15 deadline (if you're an international student who needs I-20 documents, you must register by May 31)
  2. Submit Financial Aid Information
  3. Enroll in Courses
  4. Register for Summer Orientation 
  5. Submit Housing Application
  6. Accept or Waive UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP)
  7. Meet the UC-wide Immunization and Tuberculosis (TB) risk screening compliance requirement
  8. Confirm your attendance
  9. Get Packing!
  10. First Year Edge runs from Tuesday, July 21 – Saturday, August 29, 2020
