Peer Mentors

What is a First Year Edge Peer Mentor?

Peer Mentors are role models, peer advisers, and will be your go-to for all questions related to being a student at UCSC. Here to support your transition to academic and campus life at UCSC, Peer Mentors are second, third, and fourth-year UCSC students who are experienced student leaders who went through First Year Edge themselves! They are passionate about working with students and will be available all summer long to provide support and guidance on anything related to academics, UCSC resources, navigating the campus, college life, and the ins and outs of Santa Cruz.

As peers who have been through the transition to college at UCSC themselves, they can share their personal experiences with mentees throughout the summer.

Hello slugs! My name is Cate (she/they) and I'm stoked to be helping you along during Summer Edge. This is my third summer being a peer mentor and after this summer I will be going into my fourth year at UCSC (holla!!). My major is Environmental Studies with a focus in agroecology. I'm currently working on my senior thesis investigating the transformation of a student-run garden on campus (The Kresge Garden<3) into a queer/femme anarchist space and how knowledge is produced and reproduced in non-hierarchical learning spaces. If you want to know more about how to start your own research I could offer some insight. I am affiliated with Kresge college and have been working in the Kresge Garden for almost three years now. I like gardening, non-hierarchical learning, and deconstructing binaries (man/woman, nature/human, for example). More bits of things about me are that I love lana del rey, I recently learned to sail, I love to lay in the sun, and I attended summer edge as a first year in 2017 and had a wonderful experience and I hope you do too! Can't wait to meet you over zoom and hopefully in-person when the global pandemic is over <3

I am double majoring in Psychology and Critical Race & Ethnic Studies and I am an Oakes College affiliate. I like to center myself in spaces of activism and empowerment, especially for those in marginalized groups. I am a Student Programs Coordinator for the African American Resource and Cultural Center where I serve as a lead intern and the chair of the Fiscal Committee. I am also a Residential Assistant for Stevenson College. I am an out-of-state student from the East Coast (Pennslyvania) and I am also a first-generation college student. Although I'm bummed we will not be able to have the program in person this year, I am still looking forward to meeting you all and helping you out in any way that I can. Let's have a great (remote) summer!

Hello everyone my name is Pateley (she/her). I am a third-year Film and Digital Media Major currently in my last year at UCSC. I am affiliated with College Nine because of its international theme and my background of traveling and being British. I attended the First Year Edge in 2017 and have been a peer mentor every summer since, and this program is one of my favorite programs on campus. During my free time I was also an officer on the UCSC Ballroom dance team and am also passionate about archery. I am actually a Student Life and University Guide for the campus so if I have officially or unofficially met you please feel free to say "hi" to me during the program! I can't wait to meet and get to know everyone over summer. We are going to have fun! You are all so amazing for keeping yourselves going despite the hard times and I would love to be a resource for you however long I can. Congratulations on getting to UCSC!

Hi everyone! My name is Erykah and I use she/her pronouns. I am going into my 4th year at UCSC and majoring in Cognitive Science with an emphasis in Artificial Intelligence. I am currently an Education Lead at the UCSC Veterans Resource Center where I help incoming student veterans and dependents understand their benefits and assist them with the enrollment verification process. Some of my passions include listening to music, painting, and design, but most importantly helping others navigate life whether it be on or off campus. In coming to UCSC, it was important to me to feel represented, find community, and understand that I do belong, so I am willing to lend an ear and answer any questions you may have regarding my experience with that. Stay safe out there! I look forward to meeting you all!

Jessie Halland [click here to read about Jessie

Hey there slugs! My name is Jessie (she/her) and I'm ready to make this summer the best that it can be. I'm a second-year Porter College affiliate double-majoring in Sociology and Legal Studies from Laguna Beach. I am set to graduate the winter of my third year and hope to take some time hiking and traveling around the world. My free time during quarantine has been spent experimenting with cooking - mostly a lot of pickling. I also work with a community-based food distribution program and am interested in generating aid for populations of people experiencing homelessness through raising community awareness. It took some time to get settled when I first came to Santa Cruz and I imagine that beginning college in the middle of this pandemic is even more stressful, so don't hesitate to ask me or talk to me about anything! This will be my second summer working with Summer Edge and I am so excited to meet you all over Zoom. Maybe someday soon we can go to the beach together!

Hey there! My name is Madi (she/her) and I am excited to make the most of remote summer 2020! I am a third year Cowell College affiliate and I attended summer edge as a first year in 2017. I moved to Santa Cruz from San Diego and I absolutely love living here in SC! I am an intensive Psychology Major with a minor in Education. I began as a film major, but recently discovered my love for psychology, child development, and education! I am also a "Peer Academic Success Coach" during the school year and am more than happy to help you with any academic or time management advice. In my free time I love going on adventures, hiking, basking in the sun, going to the beach, being outside, listening to music, practicing yoga, mindfulness, and meditation. I am really looking forward to meeting you all and I am so excited that you took interest in UCSC’s amazing summer edge program! Although it is remote, it is going to be a very special experience and I am so glad you'll be joining us early :) I know times are hard right now and remote learning can be very challenging, so just know that us peer mentors are here to support you in whatever way we can. Let's connect! #SocialDistancingDoesNotMeanEmotionalDistancing

Hallie Holmes [click here to read about Hallie

Hi everyone :) I’m Hallie (she/her)! I’m going into my 4th year as an Environmental Studies/Biology major. I started here at UCSC in the Summer Edge program as a first year, and have been a Peer Mentor every summer since. I'm so excited for you to be apart of this community, and hope that we can have a super cool zoom experience together. During my time at UCSC and in Santa Cruz, I've been involved with a lot of different environmental internships and currently am working on a senior thesis looking into the interactions between local coastal prairie restoration and climate change. If you want to know about how to get involved with internships and research here, I would be happy to talk about it with you. Unrelated to UCSC, some of my favorite things are eating berries, cruisin on my skateboard, drinking choccy milk, swimming in the ocean, and mostly just chillin. Oh, and going to the dog beach!! Maybe we all can go together after the pandemic is over :D Anyways, I'm looking forward to meeting ya'll and just want to let you know you can feel free to reach out to talk anytime, UCSC related or not. See you on zoom!
