Frequently Asked Questions

This FAQ is specifically designed for newly admitted students taking their first UC Santa Cruz course the summer before their first fall quarter.

Q: I’m a newly admitted student, but I don’t want to participate in Summer Edge. Can I just take a Session 1, 8-Week, or 10-Week course? [show answer

Newly admitted students can choose to just take a Summer Session 1, 8-Week, or 10-Week class online or in-person, and not participate in the Summer Edge program. In this case, students still need to register. Summer Session students are not eligible for 25% off summer tuition and need to take a minimum of 6+ credits to be eligible for state or federal financial aid and 10+ credits to be eligible for the Summer University Grant.

Q: I registered for the Summer Edge program, but do I have to take the 2-credit course? [show answer

Yes, in order to be part of the Summer Edge program, you must take either STEV 26 (first year) or KRSG 25 (transfer). If you drop the course, you will no longer receive the 25% off summer tuition and your financial aid eligibility will change.

Q: Can I take a Session 1 class in person and still do First Year Edge? [show answer

Yes, but be sure you understand the implications. You will need to move from your Session 1 housing into different Session 2 Summer Edge housing. Taking an additional course in Session 1 will increase your housing, tuition, and UCSHIP costs (if you don’t have an insurance waiver).

Q: I’m a newly admitted student, can I just take a Session 2 class online? [show answer

Yes, newly admitted students can choose to just take a Summer Session 2 class online, and not participate in the Summer Edge program. In this case, you still need to register. As a Summer Session student, you are not eligible for 25% off summer tuition and need to take a minimum of 6+ credits to be eligible for state or federal financial aid and 10+ credits to be eligible for the Summer University Grant.

Q: Can I do the Summer Edge program but not live in the residence hall? [show answer]
