Graduate Student

You are a UCSC Graduate student if you: 

  • Took graduate-level classes at UC Santa Cruz in spring 2020
  • If you are a graduate student from another college or university, you can take undergraduate Summer Session courses by registering as a visiting student

GRADUATE INDEPENDENT STUDIES

To Enroll:

  1. Please complete the Petition for Graduate Individual Studies
  2. Submit completed forms to Summer Session office in 140 Hahn or email your signed form to summer@ucsc.edu with the subject header: "Graduate Independent Study Petition."  

We will enroll you after May 1 - you will see it successfully in your portal once you're enrolled. Incomplete forms will not be processed. Forms will be scanned and emailed back to students at their @UCSC emails. 

These are considered 10-week sessions - you can complete the work any time within the ten weeks.

Fees: 

  1. Tuition for Graduate Independent/Individual Studies is:
    • $349 for 5-credits
    • $698 for 10-credits
  2. There is a non-refundable $50 cancellation fee if you drop ALL credits. 
  3. Graduate Independent/Individual Studies students are NOT charged the $283 campus fee and therefore do not receive an ID sticker for Summer but can purchase an OPERS membership and bus or parking passes for significantly less than the campus fee.  

Important Dates:

  • May 1 - enrollment opens, and we can then start processing your forms (please allow up to two weeks for the Summer Session Office to set up the course and enroll you)
  • July 24 - last day to submit a petition
  • July 27 - last day to drop 
  • August 14 - last day to request "W" grade

UNDERGRADUATE CLASSES

  • UCSC graduate student taking an undergraduate course pays the $279 per credit rate plus the Campus Fee and is subject to the dates and deadlines for whatever session the class is in. Enroll in your MyUCSC portal.
