TO BE CONSIDERED FOR SUMMER FINANCIAL AID, UCSC STUDENTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN CLASSES NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, JUNE 19

Undergraduate Students
Although funding for summer is limited, financial aid is available for current UC Santa Cruz students -enrolled in 6 or more units - to help pay costs associated with attending summer session. For students who submitted a 2008-09 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and all other requested documents and who plan on attending Summer Session at UCSC, no separate application for financial aid in summer is required. When you enroll in 6 or more units, you will automatically be considered for financial aid.
(See a list of one-, two-, three- and seven-credit courses offered this summer.)

If you plan to enroll at another UC Campus, you must complete and submit the UC Systemwide Summer Session Financial Aid Request Form to our office by no later than June 19, 2009. You may use summer aid awarded by UC Santa Cruz for attendance in a summer program at another UC campus.

Your eligibility for summer session financial aid will be determined based on annual award limits as well as on financial aid resources used during the academic year which ends in June.

Graduate Students
Graduate students may borrow Federal Direct Loans if you enroll in at least 5 units in Summer Session and if loan eligibility is remaining from 2008-09 academic year. Students must have submitted a FAFSA to UCSC for the 2008-09 academic year. Please contact the Financial Aid Office to request a student loan for summer.

Some students enrolled in summer may qualify for limited funding from their academic departments. Contact your department for more information.
Graduate students enrolled during summer in the five-quarter UCSC Education Master's program may apply for other funding including a Cal Grant extension if you received a Cal Grant as an undergraduate student.

Types of Aid for Undergraduates
  • Summer UC Santa Cruz Grants- If you received a Pell Grant during the 2008-09 academic year and enroll in classes by June 19th, you will be considered for Summer Session UC Santa Cruz Grant funds of up to $1,500 to help with the cost of summer session.

However, if you were enrolled part-time or you did not attend all three quarters, you may have remaining eligibility for summer.

  • Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)- Parents may apply for a PLUS loan to help with the cost of attending summer session. Receiving Your Financial Aid and Paying Summer Session Charges

  • If you are eligible for financial aid, the Summer Session Office will NOT require you to pay your fees before you receive your aid. Just prior to the beginning of the session in which you are enrolled, your financial aid will be applied to your Summer Session charges.
  • If your aid does not pay all your charges, you are responsible for paying remaining charges.
  • If you enroll in Summer Session I and Summer Session II, your aid will be divided equally between these two sessions.
  • If you enroll at another UC Campus, your financial aid from UC Santa Cruz will be paid to you directly and it is your responsibility to pay your summer charges.
  • Student Business Services will refund financial aid credit balances remaining after all UC Santa Cruz Summer Session charges are paid on or around the first day of the Session.

Financial Aid Adjustments for Dropping Classes and/or Withdrawing
  • You must officially drop your courses by the published drop deadlines so that you are not charged for them. Dropping classes may affect your eligibility for aid. If you drop a class after financial aid has credited your billing account, you may be billed for aid you received but were not eligible to receive due to the reduction in course load.
  • The Financial Aid Office will review your enrollment as of the add/drop deadline for each session. Financial aid will be adjusted/canceled for students enrolled less than half-time (6 units for undergraduates and 5units for graduates) as of the add/drop deadline. You will be required to repay any financial aid you received if your enrollment for summer drops below half-time.
  • If you are receiving aid and plan to withdraw completely from Summer Session and receive Ws in your courses, please contact the Summer Session Office for a withdrawal form. If you withdraw during a session, you may need to repay some or all of the aid you received.

Financial Aid Offer Cancellations
Financial aid offers not accepted by the last day of instruction of the session for which you enrolled will be canceled and cannot be reinstated.
