APPLICATION & COURSE ENROLLMENT
How to Apply (ONLY for non-UCSC students, including fall 2009 freshmen admits and fall 2009 transfer students)
The following people must submit an application form and pay a $10 application fee in order to attend Summer Session in a credit-earning status:
• Academically-advanced high school students (decided case-by-case)
• Any student from other colleges and universities
• Fall freshmen admits
• Fall transfer students
• General community members over the age of 18
• Former UCSC students (previously attended but not enrolled Fall 2008 or later)
• Any student from other colleges and universities
• Fall freshmen admits
• Fall transfer students
• General community members over the age of 18
• Former UCSC students (previously attended but not enrolled Fall 2008 or later)
To be able to enroll in UCSC courses, these “summer-only students” must submit a brief application and pay a $10 application fee on the Summer Website, summer.ucsc.edu/application. After they have applied, our office sets them up in the Academic Information System (AIS) with an account on the Student Portal, generating a Student ID Number and password. The ID number and password are then sent to the students, along with instructions on how to navigate the Student Portal & Center (my.ucsc.edu) to enroll in and drop courses. They are also informed that they should change their password.
All summer students enroll using the Student Center: MY.UCSC.EDU. The major differences during Summer Session are that there are no enrollment appointments and no priority enrollment. Beginning April 20 at 12:01 am, all summer students simply:
1. Logon to my.ucsc.edu
2. Click on “My Student Center”
3. Click on “Enroll” in the main menu
4. Select Summer Term and go from there as usual
2. Click on “My Student Center”
3. Click on “Enroll” in the main menu
4. Select Summer Term and go from there as usual
NOTE: If a continuing student logs on to the Student Portal but “Summer 2009” does not appear as an enrollment term in the Student Center, please have them contact us immediately so we can activate them for the term.
Schedules of Classes
There are two Schedules of Classes available during the summer:
1. Class Search
The regular AIS “Class Search” is linked from our website at summer.ucsc.edu/classsearch
2. Summer Session Course List
There is also a Course List on the summer website summer.ucsc.edu/courses.html - This is an invaluable resource to students because there are email links to all instructors and course syllabi posted there for almost all summer courses.

PASSWORDS: If a “summer-only student” has forgotten their original password that was sent to them, they can contact our office and we can tell them what it is. All students who have changed their passwords from the original and then have forgotten them, must contact ITS to have their passwords re-set: 459-HELP or help@ucsc.edu.
COURSE PRE-REQUISITES: We are able to check on AIS if a UCSC student has course pre-requisites and we do strictly honor them.
COURSE RESTRICTIONS: In most cases, course restrictions (including majors or class standing) are lifted during Summer Session. To find out for sure, please see the course description printed in a hard copy of the 2009 Summer Session Catalog or contact our office (9-5373). If the usual restriction is not mentioned in the course title or description, then it has been lifted for the summer term.
ENROLLMENT LIMITS: Summer Session currently allows students to enroll in a maximum of 15 units per session. If a student wishes to take more, we do require approval from an academic adviser. Advisers should send emails to summers@ucsc.edu approving a larger course load.
ACADEMICALLY-BARRED UCSC STUDENTS: UCSC students who have been barred from enrollment at the university due to poor academic performance may take Summer Session classes in order to improve their academic standing and regain matriculation to the university. If they were barred during the 2008-9 academic year, they do not need to apply to attend Summer Session. In this case, they simply contact our office and we will activate their enrollment for summer term. However, if they stopped attending prior to the 2008-9 academic year, then they must apply and pay the $10 application fee to re-activate their student account on AIS.
AUDITORS: During Summer Session, we only allow Senior Citizens (those over 55) to audit courses with the consent of the instructor. We do not allow any one else to audit courses for any reason.
How to Enroll (All Students)
PAYMENTS
As with FWS quarters, students may pay all their university-related fees with cash or check at the Cashier’s Office. However, during Summer Session, all students also have the option to pay for their Summer Session fees (registration, campus, and course fees only) and their summer on-campus housing fees by credit card, either in person at the Summer Session Office (140 Hahn) or online. Any other fees (such as library fines, broken glassware, dorm-room damages, etc.) cannot be paid by credit card.
CREDIT CARDS
Summer Session accepts VISA, MasterCard, and Discover (but not American Express). Students can pay for their course fees at either the Summer Session Office (140 Hahn) or online at: summer.ucsc.edu/payment
ID CARDS & STICKERS
During Summer Session, “summer-only students” need to go to ID Card Services (next to Bay Tree) to get their ID Cards (distinguished as “Summer Slug Cards”). Continuing UCSC students use the same ID card as FWS and receive their Summer Stickers from Summer Session Office (140 Hahn; M-F, 8:00 to 4:00). If they have lost their card, they need to go to ID Card Services (next to Bay Tree) and pay for a replacement, as always.
Spring Stickers are only valid until the end of June. To be eligible for Summer Stickers, students must have paid all their Summer Session fees first, or be an acknowledged Financial Aid recipient (as indicated by a positive service indicator on AIS). Students may get Summer Stickers at our office beginning one week prior to the start of Session One. They are then valid until the end of September, when students must obtain their Fall Stickers.
FINANCIAL AID
In order for UCSC students to be eligible for summer aid (and only if they have been receiving it during the previous academic year) they must be enrolled in at least SIX UNITS over the course of the whole summer (which is considered full-time for Summer Session). We do offer a number of one-, two-, three-, and seven-unit courses to help students become eligible for summer aid. Students should speak directly with Financial Aid for complete details. For a list of these courses, see summer.ucsc.edu/courses_for_1_2_3
NOTE: Students who decline their aid or are ineligible for it, and who therefore decide not to attend, must drop all their courses on the Student Portal.
HOUSING
For Summer 2009, all students will be housed at College Eight. The mailing address (for students staying in the dorms to receive mail) is:
Student Name
200 Heller Drive
Santa Cruz CA 95064

FACILITIES & SERVICES
Due to the smaller student population of Summer Session, some campus facilities and services operate on a reduced schedule. For the summer schedule of facilities such as both libraries, the East Field House (OPERS), Bay Tree Bookstore, etc. visit our site: summer.ucsc.edu/services
COMPUTER LAB
During Summer Session, the computer lab in Social Science I #135 (459-5140) is the one open for students’ use.

DISABILITY-RELATED SERVICES
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) now handles all students with disabilities, whether they are continuing UCSC students, or summer-only students. If you have any questions about the services they provide, please contact them directly at 9-2089 or drc@ucsc.edu
Please also be aware that the DRC often needs rooms near Summer Session classrooms in which to hold proctored exams for students who need to be tested in a distraction-free area, or who require a longer time period to finish their exams.
PETITIONS TO WITHDRAW FROM A COURSE
Students who missed the Drop deadlines may still file a Petition to Withdraw until the published deadlines. During Fall, Winter, & Spring Quarters, UCSC students get those signed by a representative of the student’s college. HOWEVER, during Summer Session, instead of getting the “College Signature” on the form, the petition must be signed by an officer from Summer Session. Please direct students who need to petition to withdraw to 140 Hahn Student Services, Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 4:00.
NOTE: There are no “Add by Petitions” during Summer Session, nor “Administrative Drops by Instructor.” Students are responsible to add/drop themselves by the published deadlines. Failure to attend courses does not constitute a drop from the course.
FINALS
During Summer Session, there is no “Finals Week”. Most final exams are held during the last scheduled class meeting, although that is up to the instructor.
GRADES, EVALUATIONS & TRANSCRIPTS
Just as in the rest of the academic year, Summer Session students receive both a letter grade and performance evaluations from their instructors.
During Summer Session, TAs are allowed to enter grades for the instructor, however the instructor must still login to AIS and approve the final grades. The grades must be APPROVED and SAVED by the instructor of record before they are posted for the students to view them.
Grades are due seven days after the end of the Session and Evaluations are due another seven days after that.
All transcripts are handled by the Registrar’s Office, not Summer Session. See:
reg.ucsc.edu
POST-SUMMER APPEALS
Students wishing to appeal Summer Session issues once fall quarter begins will likely need to have their academic adviser or preceptor present their case to the Committee on Educational Policy (CEP). However, they should contact our office first to make sure we can no longer amend their records.
